Hello,

My name is Kirby Matherne, I describe myself as an artist/ designer but I primarily work as a graphic designer. I choose not to simply use the title “graphic designer” because the method and materials that I use lend to more contemporary solutions rather than stereotypical ones. Alternative design approaches are always my favorites, I try to incorporate physical contact with my work as much as I can.

I constantly try to balance self-expression with client needs by using a variety of materials and processes. The subject matter of each piece is what determines the materials and forms the work. I push the limits of elements such as legibility for the sake of content, creating a relation between what is being said and how it is being said.

I am interested in the political and cultural effects that design has on society which is why I am attracted to social awareness pieces and posters. It's interesting how design can change or improve society. It brings to light the relationship between a designer and the public.
